Current Courier Conditions

Sierra Courier has been in business for 37 years. In that time, we’ve seen just about every crazy condition that Canadian winter can throw at us. We have drivers and vehicles on the road all the time, not just when it’s nice and sunny out.

All Sierra Courier vehicles and drivers are as winter-proof as we can make them. That goes for our independent contractors, too.

Here are some of the things we’ve learned about travelling when the weather is less than co-operative that we’d like to share with you:

  1. If you don’t have to be on the road, don’t do it. There aren’t that many things that are worth risking life and limb by driving in true blizzard conditions for. Better to be home, wishing you were at hockey practice, thank stuck in a snowdrift halfway to the arena wishing you were at home.
  2. Communication is key. In a weather emergency, a charged cellphone or working CB radio can bring help when you need it most. It can also help you help others. All Sierra Courier drivers are connected at all times, and have helped countless others when their services were needed. Local couriers to the rescue! If you don’t have a mobile communication device, be sure that someone knows where you’re going, and the route you plan to take. That way, if there’s an emergency, people will know where to look for you.
  3. Make sure your vehicle is winter-ready. Ensure you have adequate tires (snows are best), your lights work, and the wipers and washer-fluid are up to the task. Have your mechanical systems checked in the fall, including the coolant and the battery. A breakdown that’s a minor inconvenience in the summer can spell real trouble in the dead of Winnipeg winter.
  4. This is the one thing we can’t stress enough: Drive according to the weather conditions! This means slow down when the bad stuff starts falling from the sky. While getting your package where it needs to be on time, every time is important to us, we do our absolute make it happen without endangering anyone. Our motto for our drivers is “Fast on your feet, not in the seat.”

Sierra Courier would like to take this opportunity to ask that all of our drivers, employees, customers, and potential customers (so, yeah, pretty much everybody) be safe this winter!
